On today’s podcast, our hosts grapple with the latest spin-offs and their connections to the larger Yellowstone universe, and then, the cast members Harrison FordAnd the James Badge Dale & Marley Shelton Stop by for a chat about becoming a part of this incredible story spanning generations that creator Sheridan brings to life. As to why everyone should hop on the “Yellowstone” train, Ford suggests the answer is fairly straightforward, despite saying in past interviews that he’s unlikely to jump on TV.
“For me, the quality of the work they were doing there is evident,” Ford said of joining the world of Yellowstone. So my ambition to be a part of that doesn’t seem, to me, excessive. We suppose there’s a big difference between TV and movies. It’s really just a destination for that. [that’s different]. There are wonderful opportunities for complex and ambitious storytelling on TV, but that’s just where you show it. This has high quality cinematography. This would play well in the movies. But Taylor thinks of these things, not as television, but he considers them to be one-hour movies, and we’re going to make eight or ten of them. So, there are very high aspirations and standards.”

The pilot itself has a lot of characters to introduce, so don’t be surprised if you’re not sure about everything the show has been tackling so far. During the interview, Ford was quick to tease more about what they’re trying to tackle in “1923” as a whole.
“We are placed at a time in history where Jacob’s way of life is being challenged by a coming modernity,” said Ford. “Electricity comes to the homes, the streets are clogged with horseless vehicles—cars, and a little disorienting for Jacob to watch the changes in his culture, and he fears losing that way of life. The family built a way of life with determination, sacrifice, and perspiration, and now it is being challenged. There is a drought. There is competition from The herdsmen are on the grass. There is economic pressure from the banks, who are now discovering that many of their loans to ranchers are in default. Times are tough.”
As for James Badge Dale and Marley Shelton, viewers might assume that their characters like John Dutton Sr. and Emma Dutton might be Kevin Costner’s John Dutton grandparents, but I wouldn’t be sure yet. Marley Shelton was so eager to dispel such assumptions that they apparently didn’t know how their characters related to John Dutton.
“The funny thing about it is that it hasn’t been revealed to us yet whether we’re a grandmother or a grandfather [to John Dutton] Or aunt and uncle – this is still up to date [debate]. We don’t know,” Shelton shared.
Of course, Marvel fans recently celebrated Harrison Ford joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ford will take on the role of General “Thunderbolt” Ross, previously played by the late William Hurt. The actor passed away earlier this year. Many assumed that Ford would not be interested in joining the MCU; However, for Ford, the answer to why is simple.
“Listen, I’ve done a lot of things. Now I want to do some things I haven’t done,” Ford said.
One would assume those “things he didn’t do” include motion capture, as the character eventually becomes the Red Hulk. Our host, Mike DeAngelo, asked if Ford would wear a gray motion capture suit for such things. As ever, the professional Ford simply smiled and responded with a “puckered lips” sign. Can we call that an affirmation, Mr. Ford?
