6 New Movies Filmed in Syracuse You Can Watch Right Now

It’s officially winter, so it’s time to cuddle up on the couch and enjoy some movies.

Six films released in 2022 have been filmed or partially filmed in the Syracuse area, including four titles from the Liverpool-based American High. Highlights include the black comedy “On the Count of Three” by comedian Jerrod Carmichael (“The Carmichael Show”); SXSW’s notable “I Love My Father,” starring Patton Oswalt as a father estranged from his son; and American High’s first franchise, “It’s a Wonderful Binge,” a Christmas-themed sequel to the biggest movie ever shot in Syracuse (“The Binge”).

An aspiring young artist (“Girl Meets World” star Rowan Blanchard) joins the high school track team and later discovers what true love feels like when she finds herself falling for an unexpected classmate. The American High LGBTQ rom-com, produced by Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph, also stars Auli’i Cravalho (Disney’s Moana), Isabella Ferrera, Tyler Alvarez, Asif Mandvi, Michelle Bhutto, and Megan Mullally. Scenes were filmed at Syracuse Studios (the former A.V. Zug Middle School and High School in Liverpool, New York).

“Gabriel’s Trance: Part Three”

Giulio Perotti and Milani Zanetti (voice of the mother on “Bluey”) are Gabriel and Julia in the series “Gabriel’s Inferno,” partly filmed in Syracuse by director Tosca Masque and based on the best-selling romance novels by Sylvain Renard. The fifth and sixth films are out this year exclusively on Passionflix, the streaming service owned by Elon Musk’s sister, Musk.

A hopelessly estranged father hunts down his son in an attempt to reconnect. Starring Patton Oswalt, James Morosini, Lil Real Hurry, Rachel Dratch, Claudia Sulewski. Filmed in association with American High and includes scenes at Salt City Market, Western Ranch Motor Inn, Carl’s Kountry Kitchen, and Shoppingtown Mall.

“It’s a great party.”

The holiday-themed sequel to American High’s The Binge (also streaming on Hulu) is set in the near future where drugs and alcohol are banned except for one day a year. In “It’s a Great Party”, the day of the binge falls on Christmas Eve. Starring Eduardo Franco, Dexter Darden, Danny Trejo, Nick Swardson, Kaitlin Olson, Tim Meadows, Paul Scheer, Karen Maruyama, Zayn Saleh, Marta Pickars. Scenes were filmed throughout Central New York, including Syracuse Studios, Franklin Square, and Columbus Circle outside the Onondaga County Courthouse.

Comedy director Jerrod Carmichael’s directorial debut about two best friends who make a pact to end their lives. It also stars Christopher Abbott, Tiffany Haddish, JB Smoove, and Henry Winkler. It was filmed in part in the Syracuse area, including the Onondaga Lake Parkway.

Avery, a teenage perfectionist, enlists her friend Larson to help her prepare for her first time with her long-distance boyfriend. Starring Mika Abdullah, Jake Short, Fortune Famster, Margaret Cho, Rebecca Henderson, Paris Jackson. American High has been compared to John Hughes’ 1980s Brat Pack comedies.

The new releases are the latest in a growing list of films shot in the Syracuse area, along with titles like “slap blow” (1977), “Strange Talks About Sex” (1999), “express” (2008), “God bless America” (2011), “twisted arrows” (2012), “the world of adults” (2014), “Second Chance for Christmas” (2017), “American Wardrobe” (2018), Pottersville (2018), “the mountain” (2019), “big teen” (2020), “Odd Man Rush” (2020), “The Ultimate Noise Playlist” (2021), “paper spiders” (2021) and “Night House” (2021).

“Nothing Like Loyalty 2,” Written and directed by Tyrone “Tizak” Jackson and starring former Syracuse running back Robert Drummond, it premiered at the Landmark Theater last week and will receive a wider release in 2023.

Other new movies shot in Syracuse include Coming Soon “Mabel” (starring Judy Greer), “Manodrum” (starring Adrien Brody and Jesse Eisenberg), and four titles from American High (“empire waist” starring Rainn Wilson; “Master is dead” Starring Joey Bragg and Mary Stuart Masterson; Miguel wants to fight.; And the Untitled Kevin James movie). The new Siobhan Fallon Hogan original Cazenovia movie Isolation shelter“,” Filmed in the Syracuse area last year, it also recently premiered at Kevin Smith’s inaugural SModCastle Film Festival in New Jersey and will be released next year.
