England defender Alex Greenwood has signed a three-year contract with Manchester City, describing the club as her “home”.
Greenwood, whose contract was due to expire in the summer, has made 80 appearances since his arrival from Olympique Lyonnais in 2020.
Upon signing for City, Greenwood became only the second player in history to cross the derby boundaries for both Manchester and Liverpool, an honor she shares with former striker Peter Beardsley.
The 29-year-old is one of the more experienced players in Gareth Taylor’s side, having also played her part in the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory in July.
“It’s home to me,” Greenwood said EXCLUSIVELY. Sky Sports From the boardroom at City’s Academy Stadium, after a photo op. “I felt at home from the moment I arrived. For me, the decision to stay was an easy one.
“Sometimes things entertain you, sometimes they don’t. I’ve had really good experiences in my career, and that’s something I really wanted to continue with. I love being here and I love this club.
“The club’s ambition meets mine. I still believe there is a lot more we can give and achieve. I want to be a part of that. There are trophies to be won, and as a Manchester City player I would like to win them.”
“This is a place I enjoy coming to every day. Football transfers all the time but the squad we have now is really healthy and positive. We can really look forward to the future with some exciting players here. We’re in a really good place now.”
Manager Gareth Taylor added: “It’s fantastic news. It was a really important re-signing for us. Alex epitomizes what City are all about – certainly in my time here. Although there have been some ups and downs, some rotations on the squad, Alex has always delivered.” there steadily.
“She has adapted really well to playing central midfield and has established herself as one of the best players in the game [in that position]. It’s an exciting moment and a really good moment for the club. I’m glad we can move forward together.
“Alex is great at giving the right word at the right moment. She helps the younger players at the club by teaching them how to be a professional. She has had success playing with big players, in the big moments.
“We’ve worked really well together and seen big improvements from Alex. I’m pretty sure she has a lot more to come – she’s coming into her prime. For us, to have us in the next three years is great news.”
Analysis: Greenwood can be counted on as integral to the city’s success
Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter:
“Consistency is what Manchester City need. They crave it. Gareth Taylor described the summer period as a period of ‘rotation’. In fact it was a period of complete renewal. The squad has reformed in a big way, though not necessarily willingly.
Alex Greenwood, however, represents stability and regularity. She has been consistent and City are now looking to her for leadership and direction.
“During the transition of the team, Greenwood’s role shifted to the side. She went from a fullback to one of the best quarterbacks in the league.” I’m obsessed with soccer,” an interview with guardian Earlier this year, she revealed how she studies and analyzes the game in an effort to continually improve her position within it.
Greenwood’s commitment may be the most important part of City’s winter business. Once again, they revived the term, after a shaky start, losing their opening two matches in the WSL. A 10-match unbeaten run followed and Greenwood herself is the rock. Among those results, it’s a pair of safe hands – one of their best and most experienced players.
“She’s had the most touches and completed the most passes per 90 minutes of any City player this season. Her set-piece delivery is also a huge weapon. But most important is her ability to dictate from deep. When City are on top they play well,” You can bet Greenwood is at her core.”
