Premier League preview: Who are the title favorites and who has relegation worries?

Liverpool take on Manchester City in the Community Shield final at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola renew their rivalry in the traditional curtain-raiser of the season. The first silverware of the campaign will be lifted as the Premier League champions and FA Cup winner go head-to-head, and with Liverpool and Manchester City involved it should be another exciting encounter.

The teams could barely be separated last season, but it was Guardiola’s City who edged a titanic title race by a single point – thanks to a dramatic comeback against Aston Villa on the final day of the season. Liverpool beat City en route to winning the FA Cup, adding to their Carabao Cup triumph, but the disappointment of missing out on the Premier League was compounded after Klopp’s Reds lost in the Champions League final in Paris .

A week into the new Premier League campaign, both teams are still in pre-season mode after a significant summer of change at both clubs. It is indeed the start of a new era with Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez set to make their competitive debuts after big money moved in this transfer window. Just the eight touches so far for Haaland – you can hear the hot takes being prepared on the stat alone. But should we be surprised? City wanted him to be their striker from the penalty area and he had two chances inside the box. It will come.

Well, it flew away. Liverpool and Manchester City wasted no time picking up where they left off last season. It was a real fight, as Jurgen Klopp might say, and I can’t remember too many Community Shield finals in recent years that matched its intensity.

Liverpool were excellent in the opening 25 minutes and although Alexander-Arnold’s shot also deflected Ake, it was a deserved lead. City then had their fate but Haaland didn’t see much of the ball. He got two chances though, but couldn’t get a connection from a Cancelo cross.
