Germany maintained their impressive form in the group stage until the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Austria to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2022.
Germany went into the match without conceding throughout the group stage – along with England – but unlike the hosts, maintained their record thanks to an impressive quarter-final performance in Brentford.
Lina Magull capitalized on a well-crafted move from Germany to get on the unmarked ball and find the back of the net as the eight-time European champions remained in the hunt to add to their impressive record in the competition.

Austria looked to fight their way into the tie after surprisingly advancing to the round of 16 ahead of Norway, only to be disallowed by the woodwork three times during the full 90 minutes.
Both teams could have scored in the closing rallies of the match, with Germany missing the target on several occasions. They scored a late second when a poor clearance from Manuela Zinsberger bounced off Germany captain Alexandra Popp and into the back of the net.
Germany’s victory in front of 16,025 fans will see them face either France or the Netherlands in the second semi-final in Milton Keynes on Wednesday.
Although Germany came into the game as heavy favourites, it was Austria who had the first chance to score when Julia Hickelsberger-Fuller was played behind the German back line, but her low drive was recovered by Merle Frohms.

Germany hit back almost immediately at the other end as Popp was played in the center of the box but his shot sailed over the bar.
Austria seemed to be playing the counter-attack but it proved effective and Marina Georgieva’s looping header was denied only by the post.
The breakthrough came after just 26 minutes when Germany opened up the Austrian defence, Klara Buhl beat Austria captain Carina Wenninger on the ball down the left before heading back to Popp from the touchline.
Popp straddled the ball to allow Magull to side kick into the corner to give his side the lead.

Germany had a chance to double their advantage just at half-time, but Svenja Huth was only able to shoot the ball directly after breaking the offside trap.
In what would have been a tournament goal contender, Barbara Dunst tried her luck from distance with a looping shot well outside the area and goalkeeper Frohms was beaten as the ball dipped, but Austria were denied by the woodwork for the second time in the game.
Austria seemed to put on the pressure early in the second half and were once again denied by the post, this time due to a low shot from Sarah Puntigam.

German substitute Linda Dallmann had a chance to almost secure her side’s place in the semi-finals in the 69th minute when she was knocked out, but her attempt to lob goalkeeper Zinsberger was just over the goal.
In the 78th minute, Buhl’s hard-hitting shot from outside the box hit the woodwork, but Popp sealed the win late.
