1970s: Nostalgic ice cream sandwiches are back in Britain with a chic makeover

They’ve turned the humble ice cream sandwich into the coolest summer snack!

Few things tickle the palate quite like a hit of nostalgia – that sudden rush of joy at a flavor of long-forgotten childhood.

So I happily note the return to the form of ice cream sandwiches, or ‘sandos’ to use the new hipster parlance.

With a chic makeover, traditional treats are growing in popularity as we continue to melt across Britain.

But these new sandwiches are a little higher than the old-fashioned “dairy vanilla” blocks wedged between cardboard wafers that many of us remember from our youth.

Foodies can even find them in the best restaurants – the dreamy cardamom and coconut ice cream sandwiched between sticky baklava at luxury Darlish ice cream parlor in St Albans, Hertfordshire, or fried bao buns filled with Horlicks malted ice cream at trendy Taiwanese spot Bao in central London.

2022: Supermarkets, delicatessens and luxury ice cream brands offer many varieties.

Supermarkets, delis and luxury ice cream brands also offer plenty of delicious options to try, many of which are available for nationwide delivery. (Yes, it really is possible to deliver ice cream sarnies – as long as they’re packed with enough dry ice and insulation.)

So beat the heat with a rather chic trip down memory lane…

WHAT IS THAT?

A collaboration between world-renowned pastry chef Pierre Hermé, whose macaroons are generally recognized as the best, and a French start-up. Opt for chocolate, or raspberry and lychee, macaroons filled with ice cream.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

These impeccably crafted macarons retain their delicate shell and have a light, cloud-like texture inside.

The ice cream has an authentic vanilla bean taste and the chocolate macaroon has a nice bitter flavor that tones down the sweetness. These are awesome and would make a lovely special summer dessert when you’re entertaining but don’t want to bake.

VERDICT: A truly special summer dessert. 4.5/5

Badiani Gelato Cookies, £27 for six, badiani1932.com

WHAT IS THAT?

A classic ice cream sandwich from Badiani, a supreme ice cream parlor founded in Florence in 1932.

The chocolate chip cookie, coated in darker chocolate, is quite thick and filled with vanilla ice cream – or there’s the option of slices of stracciatella gelato (vanilla with chocolate flakes) between the white chocolate coated cookies . Ice cream is made with less cream than ice cream and has less air introduced into the mix due to a slower churning process.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

The cookies had a nice crumble while still retaining the bite, and the half layer of decent quality chocolate adds to the feeling of indulgence.

There is a good ratio between the sandwich and the ultra-smooth, dense and creamy ice cream with a pronounced elasticity. They provide the kind of satisfying experience that an ice cream sandwich should provide.

VERDICT: A nostalgic blow. 3.5/5

REALLY TASTY

Ruby Violet DIY Ice Cream Sandwiches, £10 for a set of ten cookies, rubyviolet.co.uk. They are the size of a small burger with a multitude of flavor permutations, such as peanut butter, double chocolate chip or white chocolate and cranberry.

Ruby Violet DIY Ice Cream Sandwiches, £10 for a set of ten cookies, rubyviolet.co.uk

WHAT IS THAT?

Ruby Violet founder Julie Fisher, a former photographer, takes ice cream ingredients very seriously – even the jam for its raspberry flavor is made by hand. These substantial ice cream sandwiches come as a kit so you can assemble your own fresh at home. They’re the size of a small burger with a multitude of flavor permutations, like peanut butter, double chocolate chip, or white chocolate and cranberry. You can add a tub of her ice cream to your order.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

The cookie has a good chewy consistency, with added almonds on top of the bitter chocolate and crispy wafer chips on top of the ruby chocolate adding texture. The ice cream also has an enticing sweetness.

I was also impressed with the size of each sando. All in all, the perfect delicious sandwich with a clean bite that then melts on your tongue.

VERDICT: Definitely worth splurging on. 5/5

EXTRAORDINARY PLEASURE

M&S Ice Cream Mini Bites, £3.50 for six, ocado.com

WHAT IS THAT?

Small but mighty, these are fun riffs on the brand’s best-selling mini bites – sweet, snack-sized treats in a range of flavors. It’s the new frozen version: more like scoops of truffle-shaped ice cream covered in cookie dough than a traditional ice cream sandwich.

They come in a wide range of looks and flavors from salted caramel to birthday cake, appealing to both adults and children.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

Pleasantly creamy and light ice cream with rather mild flavors: the salted butter caramel was a bit too subtle for me. The gluten-free caramel cookie dough coating with oatmeal cookie crumbs was rather odd, tasting too much powdered milk powder, which didn’t improve the overall feel.

But birthday cake cookie dough ice cream, coated in the hundreds and thousands, worked better and would be perfect for summer parties. The long list of ingredients is concerning (why tapioca starch or beeswax?) and there is also a lot of sugar.

VERDICT: Fun Frankenfood. 3/5

Crolla & Mollica Ice Cream Tartufo, £5 for two, waitrose.com

WHAT IS THAT?

New product, these ‘gelato truffles’ or tartufi are scoops of southern Italian style ice cream coated in pistachio or chocolate. Ideal for an instant dinner, however, it would be a stretch to claim you made them yourself.

I tested the Pistachio & Almond, but the Caffe Latte or the Hazelnut & Chocolate are also available.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

This ice cream tartufo elicited instant gasps of “wow” for its sublime balance of sophisticated flavors. There’s a pistachio ice cream in the center, surrounded by a creamy almond ice cream hand-rolled in pistachio crumbs, plus a dark chocolate version.

VERDICT: A sublime and balanced treat guaranteed to impress. 5/5

Happy Endings The Naughty One, £4.50-£5, happyendingsldn.com

WHAT IS THAT?

Young British Foodie Award winner Terri Mercieca has been pioneering her bold and modern ice cream sandwiches since 2014.

Using impeccably sourced sustainable ingredients, Happy Endings is the pinnacle of adult ice cream, with adult prices to match.

There are bright, punchy flavors for those who want something different, like strawberry cheesecake parfait and, for vegans, corn and cashew ice cream with salted caramel, which falls between a miso and corn biscuit.

HOW DOES IT TASTE?

I particularly liked The Naughty One: a salted caramel and miso parfait smashed between thin layers of chocolate cake. It’s rich, salty and creamy, with lots of umami contrast. For those who love their bold and offbeat flavors.

VERDICT: Too good to share. . .
