Bellator 285 results: Benson Henderson dominates Peter Queally, calls for another title shot

Former Bellator two-section title contender Benson Henderson proved too much to handle in the Bellator 285 main event, leaving the Irish crowd stunned by the one-sided show.

Peter Queally, who was rocking the entire arena with his exit to “Zombie” by The Cranberries, is soaked in the scene moments before the start of the main event against Henderson (30-11 MMA, 7-6 BMMA). Unfortunately for a hometown fighter, the celebration before the fight would be the only significant point, as he ended up on the wrong side of a dominant unanimous decision.

Bellator 285 was held on Friday at the 3Arena in Dublin. The main card aired on Showtime after the preliminary shows on MMA Junkie.

(13-7-1 MMA, 2-3 BMMA) wasted no time putting pressure on Henderson, as he sped through the cage and began piecing together his punching combos. Henderson remained calm and flew away as the crowd cheered Queally’s favour. Henderson went into a grappling game, pinning Queally on one knee to the fence during short strokes. This scene will be repeated over the next twenty minutes.

Round two was paused as soon as it started after a powerful kick from Henderson headed south. He quietly took his time to recover, and was awarded a point by the referee. When the action resumed, Henderson was back in the wrestling game, judging his time facing the fence while looking for short hits, but Queally kept things as they were.

After some exchanges on the feet to start the third, Henderson completed removing and unloading a series of elbows after Queally raced to get his back to the fence. He calmly got back on his feet, but Henderson kept unloading hits until the levels changed.

Henderson kept the pressure high to start the fourth round, hurting Queally with early hits. Quietly covered against the fence as Henderson bared his hips knees and short elbows. It was another five minutes of unilateral action.

Unleashing the jump key and punch combos, Henderson’s confidence was incredibly high to start the last round. Before Queally could mount any major insult, Henderson returned to wrestling to close out the fight.

Silencing the crowd, the judges shifted identical scores from 49-45 in favor of Henderson, who used his post-fight interview time to make his case for another shot at the Bellator title.

With the win, Henderson kept the momentum going after a split decision to beat Islam Mammadov in January. The former UFC Lightweight Champion walks away with a seventh win in the Bellator Series, which includes victories over Myles Jury, Adam Piccolotti, and Patricio Freire.

On the flip side, the score marks the second straight setback after losing the vacant lightweight challenger to Patrick Freire at Bellator 270. Prior to that, Queally had two wins in the second round by stopping in a row, one from Freire, the other against Ryan Scoop.
