It’s a crowded field this year for Hall of Fame nominees.

Some are expensive. Some are cheap. The youngest of them is only 27 years old. Older, OK – it’s hard to tell exactly how long the spinning surfaces were, but suffice it to say they appeared on some ancient Greek pottery.

There is Bingo, the classic lottery game that dates back to the 1500s. There nerf. There is the humble piñata.

They are all vying for a handful of coveted spots at the National Toy Hall of Fame, a long-running exhibition taking place at the powerful National Toy Museum in Rochester, New York.

“All of these 12 games have what it takes to be a contender for the 2022 class,” Christopher Bench, the museum’s vice president for collections, said in a statement.

Since Hall’s founding in 1998, 77 different games have become Hall of Famers. About half of them are from branded toys, such as Radio Flyer Wagon, Lego, and Rubik’s Cube. The others are adorable generic toys, from a teddy bear to a kite to a cardboard box.

In potential Hall of Fame entrants, strongmen are looking for four qualities, museum officials said: iconic status, longevity enough to be enjoyed by several different generations, a sense that the game promotes “learning, creativity, or discovery,” and some kind of innovation in gameplay. or game design.

This year’s finalists include Rack-O, Spirograph and Breyer horses. Another competitor is Catan – the German board game first released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan – which has sold 32 million copies worldwide and helped introduce Americans to the Eurogame style of the board game that has since become mainstream.

The most popular peak days for this round of nominees were the ’80s: Puppies Puppies, Masters of the Universe (including He-Man and She-Ra), the Stage 10 card game and the electric lighting game Lite-Brite, shown to the hall Comes of Fame in the wake of A noteworthy appearance in the new season of Netflix Weird things.

“These 12 games span across gaming history. The top is as old as civilization itself and bingo has been played in some form for hundreds of years. Universe Masters and Pound Puppies became classics in the ’80s, but they also greatly enriched the gaming world.”

Last year, the three recruits were American Girl Dolls, the board game risk and that “dry, gritty matter consists of small loose pieces of rock, soil, minerals, and precious stones” more commonly known as sand.

The public can vote until September 21 with a “Player’s Choice” ballot. An advisory committee will make the final decisions. Selections will be announced in November.
