Netflix Ryan Grantham in an episode of Riverdale
Actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting his mother.
Grantham, known for his role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and appearance in Riverdale, He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in March 2020 for the murder of his mother, Barbara White.
The 24-year-old was sentenced to life in prison at the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Wednesday. He will not be eligible for parole for 14 years, CBC Canada reports.
Judge Kathleen Kerr said poignant statements from the victim’s loved ones, such as Grantham’s sister, demonstrated the “life-destroying” impact of the tragedy. She added that the actor’s “saving grace” was that he was aware enough of what he had done and that he wasn’t in a rush.

Speaking about Grantham’s mental health issues, Kerr noted that he had struggled weeks before the actor pulled the trigger and was watching violent footage on the dark web.
According to CBC, Kerr said he is receiving psychiatric treatment while in prison and appears to be improving.
Child actor Chris Johnson, according to CTV, said Grantham was not shocked by the verdict.

“I think he foresaw what the judge had judged,” Johnson said. “I think he’s pretty worried about the whole thing. He’s a very young person, and to go into the prison system, I’m sure it’s a frightening, frightening idea for him.”
Kerr also referred to Grantham’s “little” size and said she would not advise him to go to a maximum security prison.
Grantham was 21 when he shot his mother in the head while she was playing the piano.

After the March 31, 2020, murder, Grantham allegedly planned the murder of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. CBC reported at the time that he loaded his car with three rifles, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a map with directions to Rideau Cottage, where Trudeau lives with his family.
Grantham never made it to Trudeau’s residence, and instead went to Vancouver police headquarters to turn himself in.
King’s attorney general Michaela Donnelly cited two psychiatric reports that showed the actor was going through an “intense period of clinical depression” in the months leading up to the crime, CBC reported.

Reports also showed, according to CBC, that Grantham was “suffering from urges to commit acts of violence and kill himself”. CBC added that reports said Grantham had made the decision to kill his mother “to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit”.
Complex reported that Grantham’s sister, Lisa Grantham, found her mother on April 1. Lisa shared the court’s victim impact statement and said her mother, who was battling cancer, was her “best friend.”
She said, “She was weak and Ryan didn’t give her any chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he poses a threat to her life,” according to Compound. She and her mother’s sister told the court that they “feared his release from prison”.
