EPs from the Vampire Academy explain major book-to-TV changes, including a new approach to Rose and Lisa’s story

With the premiere of Peacock’s vampire academythe school officially returned to the course in St. Vladimir. And whether your knowledge of the franchise stems from the original Rachel Meade book series, or from the 2014 film adaptation, you’ll be surprised to discover that the legendary establishment has undergone some changes.

Yes, the school is still a training ground for the two human-vampire hybrids known as “dhampir”, as well as full-blooded vampires from the group of spells known as “moroi”. But you won’t find it in the great state of Montana, as in the books, and you won’t have to travel all the way to Pennsylvania to visit the vampire royal court.

“The only thing that will come as a surprise to fans is that not only did the show not take place in Montana or Pennsylvania, but it is in such an epic beautiful setting because we were able to film it in Spain,” Margaret McIntyre, co-host of the show, told TVLine. “So you get all this visual candy, plus the whole world comes together in one sovereign. Nothing separates anymore. It’s a great way to tell the story.”

The show’s international scope also extends to its diverse cast. As co-model Julie Blake explained, “Nobody told us that we needed standardized accents or any kind of cultural uniformity. They allowed us to celebrate representation from all over the world, allowing these actors to be their true and authentic selves, rather than just acting constructively. On what the character says in the books.”

Another major change includes the main characters in the story, best friends Lisa Dragomer (played by Daniela Nieves) and Rose Hathaway (Sissy Stringer). The relationship between this princess and her guardian in training remains a heart vampire academyBut the show won’t necessarily present their story “the way you think you’re supposed to see it.”

“A lot of Rose and Lisa’s friendship – what they went through growing up, the things they saw, the trauma they had, the losses they had – was told as part of their background,” Blake says. “The first thing we did was ask, ‘Why do we want to say this as a memory when we can watch it happen in real time?'” “So we backed up the beginning of the story in the context of Girls’ Friendship, while continuing to do other elements of the story that were specific to the first book.”

“With all due respect to the film makers who made the movie, I was very upset with the company that decided to market it as I mean girls with vampires. I mentally interrupted the movie as a fan of the books, so I never watched it. Once we decided to do the show, I chose to stay pure and not see where they succeeded or failed, so we could build the show the way we really wanted to.”
