Chick-fil-A video worker caught rescuing a woman and her child during car theft

A fast food employee is being celebrated for a selfless act that was partially recorded in a video.

During the afternoon of September 14, in the Fort Walton Beach, Florida, area, a Chick-fil-A employee named Mykel Gordon helped thwart an attempted car theft that included a woman and child.

According to the Ocaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OSCO), the unnamed victim was taking the girl out of her car outside the fast food restaurant when she said a man approached her “carrying a stick and asking for her keys.”

The woman said the man then snatched her keys from her belt, opened her car door and got in, letting her scream for help.

Upon hearing the woman, Gordon sprinted to work, wrestling the alleged hijacker to the ground. Part of the struggle was captured on camera by a witness named Molly Kellner, according to a Facebook post by OSCO. The spectators shouted as a melee broke out.

She had a baby in her hands. How dare you!” says an unnamed woman in the video. “How dare you scare her like that!”

Police said the suspect punched Gordon in the face, but the second victim was not seriously injured. After wrestling the man to the ground, Gordon held him in place while other people at the scene approached to help until the police arrived.

On Wednesday, OSCO charged 43-year-old DeFuniak Springs’ William Branch with stealing cars with a gun and battery.

A press release said Gordon also told MPs that the man was involved in another incident at the restaurant earlier that day. Minutes before the videotaped incident, the man was seen getting into another woman’s car and opening the driver’s door before entering the car, according to another Facebook post published by OSCO.

Chick-fil-A of Fort Walton Beach identified Gordon as the hero in the video, praised him in a Facebook post that has been liked thousands of times and has hundreds of comments from people praising the employee for his actions.

“This is the hero! This is Michael Gordon!” the post reads. “Our mission at Chick-fil-A is ‘Service’ and today Mykel has developed more…… into ‘Save’.”

The next day, on September 15, Ocaloosa County Mayor Eric Aden and other members of the OCSO met Gordon in the parking lot where the accident occurred to thank him personally for his actions, awarding him a special coin and community service award.

“He is what we would call a humble hero,” the caption read in a video of the ceremony.

“What we often say is that service is in our DNA, this is our motto, this is our motto,” Ocaloosa County Sheriff Eric Arden says in the video. “You obviously have a service in your DNA from the job you do here but you know you served and got pregnant yesterday.”

Arden later says he was glad Gordon was there to step in as an employee of the fast-food chain, but told Gordon to call him if he was ever interested in joining the police force: “We might have a chance for you.”
