Quantum Leap original star Scott Bakula has explained he missed out on the opportunity to take part in the upcoming reboot – but not quite Why chose not to be.
Appear in Twitterthe 67-year-old actor addressed the elephant in the room – is Dr. Sam Beckett back to reboot the quantum leap?
“I have nothing to do with the new show, either in front of or behind the camera,” he explained via a series of tweets. “In January, the pilot was sold, and I was sent a text because Sam Beckett’s character was in it, which makes sense, doesn’t it?”
(1/5) To Quantum Leap fans around the world, trying to quell the rumors and move on…
First of all, thanks for walking through the decades!

That’s right – Dr. Sam Beckett was supposed to be back for the new Quantum Leap show, but Bakula moved the role for reasons he didn’t quite explain.
As many of you have asked me in the past several months: ‘How would you do?’ [Quantum Leap] without sam? (or Al, for that matter) “Well, I think we’re about to find out. That’s the story. As the show has always been near and dear to my heart, it was a very difficult decision to pass the project on, and one that upset and confused many fans of the original series” .
While he didn’t explain the reasons for turning down the offer, Bakula still seems enthusiastic about the idea of a reboot:
“The idea of ’jumping’ in time and walking a mile in someone else’s shoes remains a very attractive concept and well worth exploring, especially given the current state of humanity. In that spirit, I’m crossing my fingers as this new cast and crew are lucky enough to tap into the magic. Who pushed the original quantum leap into the hearts and minds of generations past and present. I wish them good luck and happy leap!”
It’s unknown how Bakula would have considered the show – after all, the last time we saw Sam Beckett, things ended on a rather bleak note. The show’s final episode was a wild ride, and one of the greatest final episodes in television history.
After meeting a man who may be God in the form of a bartender Al (Bruce McGill), Beckett experiences one of his strangest leaps since the series began. By the end of the episode, we are told what really happened – “Dr. Sam Beckett hasn’t come home.”
Although it may have occurred, this is a bug that restarting Quantum Leap will not be able to correct. At least, not in her first series.
The Quantum Leap Reboot stars Raymond Lee as Dr. Ben Seung, along with Caitlin Bassett, Ernie Hudson, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanressa Lee. The new show will follow “a new team assembled to restart the Quantum Leap Project in hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it 30 years after Dr. Sam Beckett hit the throttle and disappeared.”
