Mount Stunner hands Blues victory in Las Vegas after embarrassing James goal

MASON MOUNT scored a peach of a Las Vegas strike to spare pal Reece James’ blushes after his own comedic goal.

In the Blues’ first pre-season clash against Mexican side Club America, a poor first half was followed by a Timo Werner opener just after the break.

However, defender James – fresh off the bench – was left red-faced on the hour mark as his over-struck return pass caught Marcus Bettinelli on his own line.

Mount – another half-time sub – picked up the pieces and rolled up a beauty in the bottom corner with seven minutes remaining.

Boss Thomas Tuchel picked up a relatively solid roster but may have irked some of the traveling fans with two notable absences.

Summer signings Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly – for a combined £85million – have not been named in the squad.

Sterling arrived in Los Angeles – pit stop in the United States – on the first Tuesday evening after the 27th underwent a medical in London following the one-year-old’s move from Manchester City.

Koulibaly, 31, also flew out after a medical, this time in Las Vegas on Friday night – but neither was deemed ready enough to be included on the bench.

Normal starter in goal Edouard Mendy also missed this one, as well as Billy Gilmour, while the injured Armando Broja was not put in danger.

Kepa started in goal, Conor Gallagher was paired with Ross Barkley in midfield with Kai Havertz up front.

Ben Chilwell made his first appearance in a Chelsea shirt for eight months following a knee injury he suffered in November last year.

Marcos Alonso, Cesar Azpilicueta, Reece James, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Michy Batshuayi and Werner were among those on the bench.

Club America entered this one having already started their domestic league campaign, winning one of their first three games.

Hakim Ziyech had a well-saved first free kick by veteran Mexican keeper Guillermo Ochoa, but it was a rare moment in a half that lacked any quality.

Brazilian winger Kenedy, who made one Premier League appearance in his last five years as a Blues player, was particularly poor in a makeshift winger position.

Still, he came alive in the 23rd minute with a whipping effort that grazed the post before Club America closed in with a similar effort.

Gallagher’s interception then saw him play Havertz only for the German to get his shot over the bar, and Thiago Silva’s header was knocked down by Ochoa.

Tuchel made the full 11 changes for the second half, including the introduction of Jorginho and Emerson, despite not initially being named on the substitutes’ bench.

With Emerson playing as an unorthodox centre-back, Jorginho and Pulisic had instant impacts with one shot each on target in the opening minutes.

In the 55th minute, Jorginho then found James wide, whose cross was driven home by Werner on the second attempt.

Yet five minutes later, James went from hero to nil as his unpressured back pass dribbled down the line.

Chelsea pushed for a winner and they got their reward late after man of the match Mount curled into a beauty from outside the box.

Next up for Tuchel’s men is a clash against Charlotte FC on Wednesday before taking on Arsenal in Orlando on Saturday.
