“Since when have drug and sex gangsters been making political statements?”

This is the question of the hour – posed by Nolan Price – as we head to Law and orderSeason 22 movie premiere, which doubles as the third installment of a crossover event with SVU And the organized crime. (A lot fell before we got to Jack McCoy-land; you can catch up here with summaries of Hours 1 and 2.)

And now where were we? Ah yes: this gangster, Sirenko, is in police custody and accused of killing five people, in addition to a host of other crimes, and everyone is trying to figure out their motives behind the whole bomb thing. They interrogated one of his assistants, who was threatened with arrest, he handed Ava’s phone, which he found in the morning, she escaped from the boat.

The phone contains footage from Ava of a big Russian shot while drunk bragging that he would do something, a “big boom”, that would show the power of Russia to the world. But when he realized that Ava was conceiving him, he turned… which led to the melee that bloodied her and prompted her to run at the beginning of the crossing. So they arrested a Russian named Rublev.

The phone footage was cast as evidence, so ADA Maroun enlists Liv’s help in getting Nicole to cooperate with the prosecution. Just as Rollins was about to bring her into town for a meeting, the guys shot them, Nicole ran… and one of them shot Rollins in the stomach! Oh no! Is this the beginning of the end for Amanda Rollins SVU?

Benson arrives on the scene after Rollins is taken to the hospital, and the best anyone can tell her is that Amanda was alive when she was loaded into the ambulance. Then oh god Karisi is here crying. He’s desperate as he asks if Rollins is alive or not, and the look on his face as he hugs Olivia might finish me off.

Back in the area, Benson tells Price that Rollins is stable after surgery, and that the gunmen may have found Nicole because she secretly texted someone earlier that day. He has more bad news: Nicole needs to testify, or Rublev is likely to be released.

Season 22 Episode 1But the only thing Benson cares about is giving Nicole a chance at a happy life. So I put her on a plane with a relative in Toronto. “Get a court order and bring this girl back to New York!” McCoy yells when he finds out what Benson has done. But the rules of delivery make it difficult, and Marron makes the argument that Nicole’s shock would leave her in a mess that the defense could exploit in the situation. Her solution: Make a deal with Sirenko to bring down Rublev. To Bryce’s horror, McCoy was on the plane.

Sirenko says Rublev, who was basically his boss, told him to kill Ava because she knew too much about his plan to blow up the hotel. Outside then, Stabler is very hot about the fact that the man who killed Vince will spend 20 years in prison rather than live without parole.

The trial begins. Sirenko takes the stand. He annoys Rublev so much that his lawyer offers to give up Russian state secrets in exchange for indulgence. McCoy says they have to carry out the State Department’s offer, much to the chagrin of Price, who wants the Russians to pay for everyone they killed.

Rublev initially asks for immunity in exchange for what he knows, but Bryce, who has a stroke, refuses to play the ball. Instead, Rublev behaves modestly and says that he will do whatever is needed as long as Price & Co. saves his wife and children. Then, while returning Rublev to custody, the shooter shot him at point blank range. He dies while Price is trying to stop the bleeding from his neck.

Season 22 Episode 1“Although this case was highly unusual, in many respects, and the trial was cut short by unforeseen circumstances, we feel justice has been served,” Price told a group of reporters at a press conference afterward. Meanwhile, we watch Stabler lead a raid on a house where trafficked women are being held. And Cosgrove had another meal with his daughter, where he said there is no magic wand that makes everyone safe, but they do their best.

“The world isn’t perfect, but it’s still beautiful,” he continues as we watch Carisi visit a wonderful but surviving Rollins party in the hospital. Elsewhere, Lev Hits And Nicole, who seems happy, is walking in the park.
