Chris Wheeler: Eric ten Hag brings up the coaches who have counseling sessions twice a week

Erik ten Hag brings in coaches to help the Manchester United stars: counseling sessions are available twice a week where the manager leaves no stone unturned to get the best out of his team and deal with any psychological issues

  • Erik ten Hag introduced sports psychologists to the Manchester United team
  • Rainier Coeurs joined United’s mid-season training camp in Spain in December
  • Jadon Sancho has been offered support after he was declared mentally unfit

Erik ten Hag brought mind coaches to Manchester United to help his players deal with any psychological problems.

Ten Hag has left no stone unturned in his efforts to get the most out of his squad and has used Dutch firm Talent Academy Group since taking over at Old Trafford in the summer.

It is understood that sports psychologists from TAG are at United at least twice a week to provide counseling to any player who wants one.

Reynier Kuers, a senior performance coach at the Den Bosch-based company who describes himself as a life coach, joined United’s mid-season training camp in Spain earlier this month and was seen observing training from the sidelines at the club’s base in Jerez de No. Frontera.

Speaking previously about his work, Kors said: ‘Helping people makes me so happy. I do that by listening, observing, feeling what’s going on with the other person and making them aware of the unconscious behavior. Toward change. So cool!’

Ten Hag said on his trip that United were “prepared for every situation” with his players returning from the World Cup in different physical and mental states.

For example, Lisandro Martinez was a World Cup winner with Argentina, but his partner at United full-back Raphael Varane suffered the heartbreak of losing Sunday’s final in Qatar with France. Both players must report to the club next week after their short break ready for the domestic season to resume.

United’s backroom staff must lift some players – which proved difficult when England bounced back after losing the Euro 2020 final on penalties last year – and ensure others are fully focused in the second half of the season.

This is where Ten Hag hopes TAG Mind Coaches can help manage the psychological well-being of its players.

It is understood United have also offered support to Jadon Sancho after Ten Hag revealed the 22-year-old was not physically or mentally fit to join the training trip to Spain.

The Dutchman is not the first United manager to see the value of sport psychology. Ralf Rangnick brought Sascha Lens into his backroom squad, but the German followed United’s caretaker manager out of the club in the summer.

Ten Hag wants to pursue marginal gains wherever he goes to take United to the next level, and is believed to have met with cycling teams at the Tour de France to discuss feeding and sleeping patterns.
