England beat Pakistan by eight wickets: the third Test day four – as it happened

Stokes tries to finish it in style with a six down the ground but it just falls short and plugs a few feet from the boundary. Duckett now has the chance to hit the winning runs and – HE DOES IT IN STYLE – a crunching slap through the covers for four! England take the game and the series, the two batters embrace. Wow. That is some win. Stick with us for plenty of reaction.

Hello and welcome to the final knockings of this Karachi Test and what has been a hugely enjoyable (especially if you are an England player/supporter) Test series.

Last week I overslept got my timings askew in the wee small hours and was twenty minutes late to fire up the OBO, fortunately nothing much was missed. Nevertheless, lesson well and truly learnt, I’m tapping this preamble out pre-pillow rather than post alarm and with good reason – England need the small matter of 55 runs to complete a historic 3-0 series victory and the way they approached the run chase last night – plundering 112 runs in 17 overs – suggests that they could well wrap this up in minutes rather than hours. In short – it isn’t one to press snooze too.

Yesterday was a memorable and poignant day, a case of saying ‘hello’ to Rehan Ahmed, England’s teenage leg-spinning sensation, who at 18 years and 128 days became the youngest men’s Test cricketer to pick up a five-wicket haul on debut. His five for 48 from just shy of fifteen overs tilted the game decisively towards Stokes’s side. Oh, and he even came out for a bat too. Course he did.

At the other end of the cricketing journey, it was time to say ‘goodbye’ to 37 year old Azhar Ali, a fine servant to Pakistani cricket over the past decade, Ali’s last appearance at the crease in Tests yielded zero runs but a guard of honour and a solitary tear. It might not have ended how he hoped but he can look back proudly on a stellar career, over 7,000 runs and 19 centuries will bring some succour.

Will England wrap this up before dawn over here in the UK? Will Pakistan pick up a flurry of wickets to set up a barnstorming finish? Will I even bother to shake off the duvet and feign some degree of professionalism? There’s only one way to find out. But first, to bed. For tonight we sleep the sleep of… err about four hours.

Ben Duckett: “It was fitting that Stokes was there at the end, he wanted to hit a six to get past Buzz, (Brendan McCollum) he wanted him bad! Zach and I tried to be positive, his first four balls hit the pitch and we blasted off to a flyer. I’m so happy, I’ve tried to stick to my game, if I’m too critical I’ve let some runs in there. Abrar is a good player but we probably gave him some wickets in his first innings. It’s easy to get into the mentality of this team. I’ve never played in a team like this before.. All the pressure comes from you.”

Illuminating and revealing words about how truly an England approach can free a player.

The nature and scale of this victory for England begins to sink in:

A truly amazing feat done by Ben Stokes, Brendan McCollum and the England team. No party in history has managed to do a clean sweep of Pakistan, and to do so in this manner. Exceptional. pic.twitter.com/Ge0HnjH2Z2

Nasir Hussain just did a quick interview with Ben Duquette, and I’ll be posting some quotes soon.

It’s time to fire up your emails before interviews and presentations.

Morning James, morning everyone!

Good morning, Ms. Jackson.

“What would last longer than today’s play? My coffee pot. (Was this the case?)

Well done England, well done Pakistan – there will be days for you but not today – and the work has been done in December so far with cricket on an early start.

And RIP Terry Hall, my dad had a Mobil 80 gas station tape and had Ghost Town on it, an excellent song with deep meaning even today.”

Pakistan has been amazing The series was presented in a beautiful spirit. It’s been 17 years since England last played here, but, as Mike Atherton said on TV, it was almost worth the wait for what we’ve seen over the past few weeks.

A fitting tribute by Alexis Petridis.. https://t.co/9rYmaSetld

Obviously, young Rehan Ahmed is making fun of this particular figure.

England win by eight wickets!

Stokes tries to finish it off elegantly with a six down but it is Just It shortens and plugs within a few feet of the boundary. Duckett now has a shot at hitting the ground running and – he does it with style – a smashing slap through the covers for four! England takes the game and the series, the batsmen embracing. Fabulous. This is some win. Stay with us to get a lot of feedback.

It is absolutely insane to think that the England men started this calendar year having already lost the Ashes and hustle to avoid the whitewash, and finish with the Test captain having won 9/10 Tests and trying to break the record (held by his coach) without. of 6 in Test cricket. #PAKvENG

It’s little, isn’t it?

27th place: England 161-2 (Ducette 76, Stokes 32). Stokes punched Mohammed Waseem through the covers, the target now in the single digits. Duckett shakes and swings for a couple, he’s been brilliant on this tour, he’s just moved on to young string player Harry Brock I’d have to consider.

25th: England 155-2 (Ducette 75, Stokes 27) Normal service resumes as Abrar is taken off seven runs. It would be nice if Stokes was there at the end… Oh Like I write that Stoke has mowed wilderness below and has been bombed for a long time! Tough opportunity, but weedy. All this will end very soon

24th place: England 148-2 (Duckett 73, Stokes 22) Less spotted virgin! Fair play to Mohammed Waseem who served six points, keeping Duckett honest with a tight line around the off stump. We go!

Don’t rule it out…

Idea: Stokes might get the bowler to hit the winning runs here.

He had Jimmy Anderson lined up at one point during the summer as he had never achieved a Test win before. I’m not sure who will get the honor today, but every chance I count… #PakvEng

24th place: England 148-2 (Duckett 73, Stokes 22) England are heading towards a historic victory, with Stokes and Duckett starting runs, less than the twenty kicks now required to complete the win and take the series 3-0. It’s great when you see it written like this.

23rd: England 144-2 (Ducette 70, Stokes 21) Six more runs from Wassim as Duckett drives hard with a ground out. Stokes is happy to let his younger partner do the damage, so he puts together a couple.

22nd place: England 138-2 (Ducette 64, Stokes 21) Ben Duquette got out of the traps incredibly quickly, peeling four times against Abrar. England are making short work of that goal.

Preamble – Journey

Hello and welcome On to the final batting of the Karachi Test and what was a very interesting Test series (especially if you are an England player/supporter).

Last week i oversleep I got my timing oblique In the wee hours of the morning and twenty minutes late launching OBO, luckily nothing was missed. However, lesson well and true learned, I’m hitting that boot before the pillow rather than warning and with good reason – England need 55 runs to complete a historic 3-0 series win and the way they approached the run chase last night – sacked 112 runs On 17 times – indicating that they could finish this in minutes instead of hours. In short – not pressure to snooze either.

Yesterday was a poignant and memorable day, as it was a case of saying ‘hello’ to Rehan Ahmed, England’s teenage leg-spinning sensation who, at 18 years and 128 days, became the youngest small men’s cricketer to take a five-wicket haul on debut. His five for 48 from just shy of fifteen overs tilted the match decisively towards Stokes’ side. Oh, and he’s out for the bat, too. Of course he did.

At the other end of cricket’s journey, it’s time to say ‘goodbye’ to 37-year-old Azhar Ali, a great server of Pakistani cricket for the past decade. Ali’s last appearance at the crease in Tests resulted in no runs but a wicketkeeper of Honor and solitary tears. It may not have ended the way he had hoped, but he can look back with pride on a stellar career, over 7,000 runs and 19 centuries that would bring some success.

Will England wrap this up before dawn here in the UK? Will Pakistan pick up a flurry of wickets to set up a Barnstorm end? Would I bother fluffing the quilt and pretending to be a degree of professionalism? There is only one way to find out. But first, to bed. For this night we sleep … miss about four hours.

Play starts at 5am UK time (gulp)
