“This was an incident that occurred completely outside of EastEnders care.”
Speaking to The Sun about the incident, Gemma said:Looking back now I should have reported them but I only know that now as a mature woman. At that time I was a child, I was under 16 years old.
I wasn’t sexually active, and I didn’t know what was going on, what they were trying to achieve. I just knew it was scary experiences.
I am frustrated that they ever happened. At the time, you were grateful to be famous so you kept your mouth shut and carried on. That shouldn’t be the case.
Gemma is best known for playing Claire Bates in EastEnders – whose on-screen father is the hapless Nigel Bates, before playing Claire Devine in Hollyoaks.
Who she is: Gemma played Claire Bates in EastEnders – whose father is down-on-his-luck Nigel Bates, before playing Claire Devine in Hollyoaks (the actor hasn’t been part of any accusation)
The actress said she was also inappropriately posed when she appeared in a pantomime after leaving EastEnders – with “no aftercare whatsoever”.
She said the person in question was about 13 years her senior and she enjoyed flirting with her at the time not fully understanding what was going on.
Gemma thought it was normal at the time for him to make advances on her, but looking back, she realized it wasn’t because she was an underage child.
She was just nine years old when she joined EastEnders in 1993, left in 1998 and returned briefly in 2008.
New role: Gemma went on to play the villainous Claire Devine in Hollyoaks
She said that while on the set of EastEnders she always felt safe and protected and had various chaperones with her.
But after her contract expired, she claims she didn’t feel as though she had proper aftercare — that was normal at the time and things have changed since then.
Gemma said she is now speaking out to prevent this from happening to anyone else in the industry and wishes she had said something at that time.
She is now the mother of two daughters, ages seven and five, and what happened to her has put her in the forefront of her mind.
Shocking: The actress said she was also shown inappropriately when she appeared in Aladdin in a pantomime after leaving EastEnders – with no aftercare whatsoever – (she was portrayed in Cinderella in 2010 – a few years after the accident)
