Frankie Dettori was described as absolutely fantastic by his peers after his shock announcement on Saturday that 2023 would be his final year in the saddle.

Six-time Derby title-winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute believes Dettori has no equal in the weight room, while five-time title-winning jockey Willie Carson has put the Italian on par with Lester Piggott.

“The crowd loved him and he was a huge contributor to the sport, so we will miss him very much,” said Stout. “I’ve never seen anyone better than him with this character.

“I had six seconds in the St Leger and then Conduit rode in it for me. He came to the paddock and called out all the names of the jockeys who hadn’t won the race for us and then went out and won it.

“We’ve had great success in big races with Lanfranco – two Breeders’ Cups, a Japan Cup and a Liger. He’s an amazing talent, a great artist and we will miss him very much.”

In addition to winning the Conduit’s Leger in 2008, Stoute introduced Dettori to a recent winner of the Magnificent Seven in 1996 courtesy of the Fujiyama Crest and reminisces about the 25-year-old’s rise before he gets out to ride.

“He walked into the ring and said, ‘Well, if this doesn’t win it’s the coach’s fault because I’m so hot! ‘” Stout said. “

Willie Carson has the rare distinction of riding both Dettori and his sire Gianfranco and ranks Dettori Jr. as one of the best riders of any generation.

Carson said, “I was a good friend of his father’s and used to return packages from his father in Italy to Frankie when he was a kid. He was always talented and always had this natural way of doing it. I’m Piggott and I’m a man who put Dettori on an equal footing with Piggott, who was a genius.”

“He did so much for the races and we have to be grateful for his performance. I will look forward to the Champions Day at Ascot and hope he gets a good send-off. I don’t think though, I’ll be riding seven winners!”

Trainer Simon Crisford was Godolphin’s Racing Manager during Dettori’s long and successful tenure as a first rider in the Sheikh Mohammed Racing operation and described his friend as “a great guy”.

“What he’s done for horse racing is something really special,” said Crisford. “He’s been the most amazing jockey, not just on the racetrack but off it too. He’s been the face of British racing for several decades now and he knows just the right time to stop and he’s made that decision for next year’s end. I suspect he’s going to put a lot of fire in his stomach and we’ll see him ride the year Next as he did when he started.

“We’ve shared some great moments together at Godolphin, including the Magnificent Seven, when we had four winners including the Mark Of Esteem. What a wonderful guy and an unbelievably fine jockey we’ve all been fortunate enough to witness in our lives.”

Bookmakers Paddy Power hold Dettori at a 12-1 chance of winning Strictly Come Dancing in one of the next three years and fellow weight roommate Martin Dwyer expects to see the 52-year-old in his dancing shoes soon.

“He’s a real person but he’s emotional and I worry about him about how he’s going to fill the void when he stops riding because he’s feeding on him and he’s feeding on the crowd behind him – he loves it,” said Dwyer.

I don’t know how he’s going to replace that, but I personally think he’s made for show business when he stops. I promise you now, we’ll see him wearing sequins by the end of 2023 and I can’t wait to take a gander at him either because he might have a beat on a horse but he’s not on the dance floor!
