Jadon Sancho is ‘still absent from training at Manchester United’ after Erik ten Hag said he was ‘not mentally ready’ to return to action.

United play Burnley in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night but winger Sancho will not be available for selection amid concerns about his mental state.

Sancho closed his social media accounts last month in a bid to be ready for the second half of the season, but the move has only led to more concerns about his health.

Sancho, 22, has been undergoing an individual training program in the Netherlands on the recommendation of Ten Hag in recent weeks after he failed to get into the England squad for the World Cup.

The aim was to get Sancho back to peak fitness, especially mentally, and to try and rediscover the form he showed during a bright opening to the season.

Sancho did not travel to Spain with other United players who did not participate in the World Cup for a warm training camp and friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, Sancho is still unable to return to full training at United’s home ground in Carrington. He has not been photographed in team practice since Oct. 31.

Ten Hag has spoken to the £73m Sancho about his situation on several occasions but has not set a time frame for his return to training.

“We want to bring him back as soon as possible, but I can’t predict when,” Ten Hag said earlier this month.

Sometimes there are conditions related to physical fitness and temperament. We get a drop in quality and sometimes you don’t know why or why.

That’s what we’re doing now to try to get him back there. It is a mixture of physical and mental.

Sancho has not played since October 22 due to illness and has raised concerns about the talented Londoner, even more so after he closed his social media accounts last month.

Sancho has been training with a coach trusted by ten Hag at Dutch amateur club OJC Rosmalen, with a short video emerging showing him dribbling around training beams.

United will ideally have a fit and available Sancho ahead of a hectic Christmas schedule.

The last time he played for them was in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on October 22 and then he was sidelined with illness.

After the Burnley game on Wednesday night, United host Nottingham Forest on their return to Premier League action on December 27 before traveling to Wolverhampton on New Year’s Eve.

Ten Hag’s side followed this up with a home match against Bournemouth on 3 January and an FA Cup third round match at home to Everton on 6 January.

This comes as the nine players in the team that exited in the quarter-finals return to the club in time for the confrontation with championship leaders Burnley.

Harry Maguire, part of the England side that were knocked out in the quarter-finals in Qatar, could feature on Wednesday as first-choice defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are finalists with France and Argentina respectively.

Presumably available are Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Fred and Antony, although Diogo Dalot is being assessed with a hamstring injury.
