Mead wins Sports Personality of the Year award

England and Arsenal striker Beth Mead has been named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022.

Mead shone at Euro 2022 this summer, helping the Lionesses to glory at Wembley, the first major women’s football tournament in England.

The 27-year-old became the first female soccer player to win the award.

In a public vote England Test captain Ben Stokes was second and Eve Muirhead, who captained Team GB to gold at the Winter Olympics, finished third.

Athlete Jake Whiteman, seven-time world snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan and gymnast Jessica Gaderova were also shortlisted for the award.

“I am speechless for once,” Meade said.

“I’m incredibly honored to win this award. I wouldn’t have done it without the girls. The team supported me. Yes, I won this award, I scored some goals but I wouldn’t have done it without them.”

“This is for women’s sports and women’s sports are heading in the right direction. Let’s keep pushing girls, let’s keep doing the right thing.”

Med’s impressive performances at Euro 2022 saw them named Player of the Tournament as well as winning the Golden Boot with six goals and five assists.

Mead also won the Team Sports Personality of the Year award alongside her Lionesses teammates while England manager Sarina Wegman won the Coach of the Year award.

The accolades are the latest in a long list this year, with Meade already named Arsenal’s Player of the Season for 2021-22, finishing runner-up at the Ballon d’Or Feminin and winning the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award.

Her international tally in the 2021-22 season was 20 goals in 19 matches, breaking Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing record for scoring the most goals for England in a season.

An incredible year from Mead to remember

After being left out of Team GB’s squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Mead’s success has been quite remarkable.

She scored in four of England’s six European Championship matches, including a hat-trick against Norway in the group stage, and edged out Germany’s Alex Pope for the Golden Boot.

She also helped England qualify for next year’s World Cup with a record 100% and without conceding a goal.

The Euros was England’s first major tournament title and the first for a major team since the men won the 1966 World Cup.

Domestically, Mead has been in impressive form for her club, Arsenal, ahead of the tournament, scoring 14 goals and providing 19 assists in 40 games in the 2021-22 season, as Arsenal came agonizingly close to the Women’s Super League title for the first time since 2019 but finished runner-up. Second place in front of Chelsea by one point.

Mead’s 2022-23 campaign was shaping up to be a prolific but it was cut short after she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Manchester United in November, putting her hopes of playing in next year’s World Cups in Australia and New Zealand in doubt.

Presented by Gary Lineker, Claire Balding, Gabe Logan and Alex Scott, Sports Personality of the Year 2022 will be broadcast live from MediaCityUK, Salford.
