The first completely wireless TV can be stuck to any wall you like
We regularly bemoan how standard TVs have become of late, but that criticism couldn’t be directed at the recently announced 4K OLED wireless TV from US startup Displace.
The 55-inch “Displace TV” is relatively light at less than 20 pounds and somewhat uniquely runs on rechargeable batteries.
Interestingly, you can combine multiple Displace TVs together to form one massive display, with the company suggesting that you can attach “four TVs to create a 110” TV at 16K resolution. (Someone should note at this point that four 4K panels put together will only allow 8K—but we’re willing to ignore that fact because of the wild concept.)
In a press release revealing the concept, Displace claims the TV can be easily secured to any surface without the need for difficult installation, thanks to its vacuum attachment technology.
The TV uses a wireless base unit box powered by an AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU that must be plugged into an electrical outlet, which appears to rely on Wi-Fi 6E to relay images to the screen.
On top of all this, the TV can be controlled with hand gestures via a built-in camera (special types and those who still have their dignity will be reassured that this feature can be turned off), as well as touch and voice via the included remote control.
Displace claims its proprietary hot-swap battery will last a full month before needing to recharge, based on an average usage of 6 hours per day.
Initially, the TV will only be sold in the United States, and the world will see the TV in its own flesh for the first time at CES 2023 in Las Vegas next month.
Reservations are now available on Displace (Opens in a new tab)with a TV launch slated for late 2023.
Analysis: The concept of wireless, off-the-wall TV leaves us with a lot of questions
With a few exceptions, (we’re looking at you Loewe and your concrete OLED TV), it’s fair to say that TV design has become somewhat of a cookie-cutter over the past few years, so when a fresh new offering on the venerable Google box comes along , our interest upset.
There are some great key features of Displace TV, and it’s fair to say that some leave us feeling a little skeptical.
The weight of the TV, for example, feels remarkably light since it would need a battery system capable of powering a 55-inch OLED screen for several hours, while we’re also keen to know how big the gap between displays is. Pair multiple displays together.
Oddly enough, it’s arguably Displace TV’s mildest feature that has us excited, with the ability to mount the TV securely to the wall with a “slight push” instead of the traditional permanent wall mount we’re used to for big screen displays being a potential game-changer. .
We’re sure to be making a beeline for Displace in Las Vegas next month, so be sure to stay tuned for TechRadar’s full coverage of CES 2023 for our first thoughts. If you’re in the market for a new TV right now, check out the best OLED direct deals this month.
