Silly puppeteer in ‘talks prequel with US TV network 75 years after beloved character made UK debut – and hopes to follow in Paddington Bear’s footsteps

Sooty is finally getting ready to break America, 75 years after his TV debut in the UK.

Puppeteer Richard Cadell, 53, revealed that he is in a “progressive talk” with a high-profile network about a show across the pond.

He told The Sun he hopes to emulate the success of fellow British bear Paddington, who starred in two successful films.

The mute yellow glove puppet, created by Harry Corbett, first appeared on UK screens in 1955 joined by Panda Pal Sue and Dog Sweep.

“We got a phone call from an American TV producer who said, ‘I’ve been told Sooty is as much an icon in the UK as Sesame Street is in the States,'” Richard, who took over as a puppeteer in 1998, told the publication.

‘It’s a matter of time. They love everything we do like Paddington and The Royals.

MailOnline has contacted Richard’s representatives for further comment.

He went on to reveal that King Charles and Camilla are huge fans of the doll and it has appeared several times at their birthday parties.

It comes after the Sweep doll fetched a staggering £3,000 at auction last year.

The price was more than three times the expected amount—and £250 more than the figure which Sooty had come up with—which sold for £1,500.

The original puppets were part of a collection of memorabilia from The Sooty Show that belonged to Peter Jago, one of its master puppeteers, who died in 2016.

In all it fetched over £11,000 when it came under auction at Ewbank in Surrey.

The array of items offered at the Children’s Muppet Show has blown estimated selling prices out of the water.

Sooty’s Little Cousin Scampi, a late format release in the early 1990s, attracted a £2,000 price tag.

Along with the original dolls, props and costumes from the show were also sold, including the white rabbit and magic box from Sooty’s magic routine, his infamous water gun and magic wand.

The complete set sold for £11,250 including premium – three times the forecast on November 18th.

Ewbanks specialist Alistair McCrea said: “Fortunately Sooty and Sweep behaved very well and were able to keep Little Cousin Scampi in check throughout the proceedings.

“We were thrilled with the presenters’ reaction, and there is no doubt that this group has created quite a stir.”
