Over the next two weekends, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt star in silent film stars in Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle’s latest effort, Naomi Ackie channels Whitney Houston in a musical biopic, and Emma Thompson stars as the heavyweight Netflix kid and Antonio Banderas again. The coolest animated cat sounds around. (Sorry Garfield.)

Big blockbusters join “Avatar” at the cinema for Christmas
“Avatar: The Way of Water” dominated the opening weekend box office, but faces some serious competition for the holiday season in theaters and at home:
- “Babylon,” “The Whale,” and “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” will draw the big movie fans in the crowd.
- “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” are here to entertain the kids.
- If you’re hanging out near the couch, “Glass Onion,” “Strange World,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are all coming to a streaming service near you.
If you need a cool cartoon for the holidays: “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”
In the smug Banderas Cat’s second solo movie, Boss learns he only has one of nine lives left and is looking for a legendary star to wish her back. He’s joined by former Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and cheerful adventurer Perito (Harvey Guillén) for a hilarious fairytale mayhem and surprising exploration of mortality and living life to the fullest.

If you dig the dark, heartbreaking stuff: ‘Pisces’
One of the best films of the year, Darren Aronofsky’s drama is a spin-off of Brendan Fraser, who plays an obese internet writing teacher hoping to reconnect with his estranged, mischievous teenage daughter (Sadie Sink). Fraser brings a bunch of heart and Sink has got serious fire in an excellent effort that’s unsettling as well as hopeful.

If you want a star-studded trip back to old school Hollywood: ‘Babylon’
Chazelle’s ode to 1920s Hollywood embraces mayhem and debauchery in the story of an aspiring silent film actress (Robbie), A-list leading man (Pete) and Mexican assistant (Diego Calva) trying to get his foot in the door. It wears on over the course of three hours and changes, but the movie is great when it veers completely off the madness.

If you are a fan of Whitney Houston: I want to dance with someone
Those who hated “Bohemian Rhapsody” might want to skip this unforgettable musical drama. A quick examination of Houston’s life chronicles her rise from chorus girl to global superstar and the drug addiction that blighted her career. The great icon’s songs come a long way, however, Aki inhabits Whitney like a champ.

If You Live For Costume Drama: “Corsage”
Vicky Krieps rules in an Austrian biopic more interesting than you think as Empress Elisabeth, a 19th-century style icon in public and mischievous rebel in private. When she turns 40, she escapes her oppressive home life and heads out to reconnect with former lovers and friends to recapture youthful vigor.

If you’re down for a discussion at the right time: “Women Talking”
Based on the novel by Miriam Tauz, writer/director Sarah Polley’s intimate drama centers on a group of women in a religious colony who, after a series of rapes, must decide whether to stay or go. The acting is exceptional, with Jesse Buckley, Claire Foy, and Rooney Mara among those playing characters whose fates are determined in a barn debate.

If you’re an English fan (or just love Bill Nighy):
Nighy received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his role as a 1950s bureaucrat working in the Public Works Department who discovers he is terminally ill. The thoughtful drama follows a reserved man who wakes up from his boring life and, inspired by a young employee (Amy Lou Wood), makes a difference in the rest of his remaining days.

If you want to see Emma Thompson in bad shape: ‘Matilda the Musical’
Fans of Dahl’s 1996 adaptation will sing the praises of this hilarious and quirky musical remake based on the stage show. Alisha Weir plays the brave girl with a genius mind and remarkable powers sent to a boarding school by her neglectful parents, and leads the rebellion against the oppressive headmistress (Thompson).

If you’re in the mood for a hardcore crime series: American Murderer
Emmy nominee Tom Pelfrey has just as much criminal charisma as Jason Derek Brown, a con man indebted to the wrong people who go to extremes and risk his family’s livelihood to save his own skin. Ryan Phillippe co-stars as an FBI agent hunting him down in this intriguing twist on the real-life story of a wanted fugitive.

- The sequel to Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” featuring Janelle Monae, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, and Daniel Craig as returning detective Benoit Blanc, is available on Netflix Friday.
- The sci-fi adventure of Disney’s animated family, “Strange World,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid, arrives on Disney+ Friday.
