X Factor boss comments the iconic show could make a surprise comeback – ahead of its 20th anniversary

The X Factor helped launch the careers of Harry Styles, Alexandra Burke, Little Mix, and Olly Murs over a series of fourteen.

And now, the talent show — which launched in 2004 and last aired in 2018 — may be making a surprise comeback before its 20th anniversary in 2024.

“I think the X Factor isn’t gone for good,” said ITV Boss’ Kevin Lego, giving hope to fans across the country.

Speaking this week to the Broadcasting Press Guild, ITV’s head of programmes, Kevin, said: “I think the X Factor isn’t gone forever, don’t say never”.

“It was our most successful show in nearly 20 years and we still work with Simon on a daily basis.”

MailOnline has contacted ITV for further comment.

Last year, Simon reportedly took the ITV show off because he didn’t want it to become “a bit of a joke”.

A show insider told The Sun: ‘Globally, it’s still a phenomenon and goes by the millions every year. But in the UK, there is no doubt that it is getting a bit out of date.

Simon stays on top of his game and knows how to deliver. He owns the rights to the show, and it’s his calling – not ITV – whether he drops it or not.

“Obviously, the last thing he wants is for The X Factor to fade away with a whimper and become some kind of joke – especially so unlike the show in its pomp.”

It follows an appearance by ‘unknown’ Simon who left audiences in shock after he took to stage at the Royal Variety Performance, which was filmed on 2 December and broadcast on ITV on Tuesday night.

The TV personality, 63, has left viewers distracted by his incredibly smooth appearance, which could be the result of plastic surgery, with one asking, “What did he do to himself?”

Simon was introducing BGT winner Axel Blake, but things didn’t quite go as planned when the X Factor judge accidentally broke the golden buzzer from his stand in a blunder.

The record producer had previously teased him about his appearance, and taking to Twitter, a viewer wrote: “Just watched Simon Cowell on Royal Variety, what did he do to himself?”

While another added: “WTF did you do your face boy?” A third added: “Simon Cowell needs to stop getting facelifts!”

In agreement, a fourth commented, “The ball moved through the first half of football and that was what Simon Cowell ordered George Michael from Wish to get on stage.”

An embarrassing mistake happened to Simon on stage when he hit the buzzer before comedian Axl’s performance.

The button snapped off the mount in his hands, leaving the star held close to his chest.

From? It comes after Simon appears

From? It follows an appearance by the ‘unknown’ Simon who left fans in shock after he took to stage at the Royal Variety Performance, which was filmed on December 2 and broadcast on ITV on Tuesday night.

Simon shrugged at host Lee Mack who laughed awkwardly before continuing on with the show.

He earlier worried fans in a promotional video shared on social media earlier this month.

The TV mogul looked unrecognizable as he had incredibly smooth skin, snow-white teeth, and enhanced features.

During the video, Simon encouraged people to reach out for a British Got Talent audition, just days after judge David Walliams quit the show.

In the short VT he said, “I always say on this show, two or three minutes can change your life. And hers. And maybe this time it will be you.”

“So please audition now for next year’s season and I look forward to meeting you.”

Simon has lost 20 pounds over the past two years as he overhauls his lifestyle, maintaining a regular sleep and exercise schedule, after breaking his back in 2020 when he crashed his electric bike near his home in Malibu.
